Demonstrated commitment to addressing environmental concerns

The Viera Company has had several meetings and site visits with local environmental leaders to discuss their concerns with the West Viera expansion plans.  Based on our discussions, we’ve made substantial revisions to address many of their concerns. We hope these changes demonstrate our continued commitment to creating livable communities and good land stewardship.  Those revisions include:

  • Adding to the land set aside for conservation and habitat protection now totaling 45 percent of the property (Lakes, parks, recreational areas, preserved wetlands and upland buffers will increase the amount of protected open space to more than 50 percent of the expansion area).
  • Expanding the buffer between uplands and wetlands on the additional land set aside for conservation.
  • Redesigning the West Viera plan to revise portions of those areas designated as "Rural Area," "Conservation Area" and ""Rural Development District."

The form of development proposed for West Viera provides the opportunity to conserve a large tract of land for conservation and wildlife habitat, which offers the best way to protect and enhance significant wetlands and uplands.  This land, the Viera Wilderness Park, will be comprised of over 5,000 acres and managed by the Viera Stewardship District in accordance with a government approved habitat management plan at no cost to Brevard County.
