On Tuesday, the Brevard County Commission voted to transmit proposed amendments to the Brevard County Comprehensive Plan, as they relate to West Viera expansion, to the Florida Department of Community Affairs (DCA) in Tallahassee. This moves this particular part of the approval process forward and will increase the scope of review of the West Viera expansion plan by including regional and state review agencies such as the DCA.
The proposed Comp Plan Amendments are just one part of the overall approval process for West Viera which includes two additional and parallel tracks for review – Development of Regional Impact and Planned Unit Development Zoning.
For the Comprehensive Plan Amendment track, next steps include:
- Report from DCA: Within 60 days of receipt of the transmitted Comprehensive Plan Amendments, the Department of Community Affairs issues an Objections, Recommendations and Comments (ORC) Report to Brevard County.
- Response to DCA (projected, June 2008): A response to the ORC Report is customarily issued by the County to the DCA prior to an adoption hearing.
- Local Planning Agency – Adoption Hearing (projected, July 2008): This advisory hearing is scheduled prior to the County Commission’s Adoption Hearing.
Through the entire process, The Viera Company will continue to work with County staff and environmental advocacy groups to review and refine certain aspects of the West Viera plan.
The Viera Company wishes to thank all West Viera supporters who have expressed their enthusiasm for this project. Their past and future support is greatly appreciated.
We will continue to keep you informed with additional updates on the Comp Plan Amendment process, as well as the other review processes, as they happen.

West Viera supporters in yellow shirts turn out to show their support before the Brevard County Commission.
