On April 7, ground was officially broken to begin construction on the Pineda Causeway Extension, which will connect to the Pineda Interchange already under construction at I-95.
The Pineda Extension and Interchange, connecting A1A, US 1 and I-95, will be a new and important addition to Brevard County’s major transportation corridors.
The Viera Company was privileged to be part of the strong coalition of representatives from the county, state and federal governments who worked together over many years to create this transportation solution, which will benefit all of Central Brevard County. The Pineda Extension and Interchange will help ease traffic congestion on county roads, play a vital role for the county’s emergency services and serve as an additional evacuation route during hurricanes.
For its part, The Viera Company envisioned the need for this vital road improvement in 1990 with the acquisition and consolidation of several parcels of land to reserve the right-of-way. In 1996, an agreement to donate the right-of-way for the Pineda Extension was reached with Brevard County, and an agreement to donate the land required for the Pineda Interchange was finalized with the Florida Department of Transportation in 2007. In all, The Viera Company and its affiliates have donated over 120 acres of land and contributed almost $7 million to make the Pineda Extension and Interchange a reality.
“We hope that public-private partnerships such as this will continue as we seek constructive transportation solutions for all of us living here in beautiful Brevard County,” said Steve Johnson, president of The Viera Company.
